Intro to Surfing

A ripple, caused by wind, travels across the ocean and as it starts to reach the land, it stands up, you ride with it for its last few moments of existing before it crashes on the beach and is gone forever.  There is no comparison for the feeling you get when you ride your first wave.  For thousands of years people have been chasing that feeling.  Warm water, soft sand beaches, and small waves make the Lowcountry an excellent place to learn to surf.  South Carolina may not be a surfer’s paradise, but we have good, rideable waves just often enough to keep you hooked.  Just sitting on your board past the breakers and watching the pelicans and dolphins playing is rewarding in itself. Salty Kidz’ Intro to Surfing outings are led by CPR certified experienced surfers.  They are experienced in providing safe, educational, and fun surf instruction.

SUPing!

Stand-up paddle boarding is the fastest growing sport in the world, and for good reason.  It’s a great work out.  Anyone can do it.  Standing upright while paddling gives you a better vantage point for wildlife viewing.  And most of all, it is super fun.  Whether you’re surfing or cruising the creeks, it is the most enjoyable method of water travel. Salty Kidz’ SUPing! outings are led by CPR certified guides who are trained naturalists.  They are experienced in providing safe, educational, and fun stand-up paddle board outings.

Naturalist Excursions

In the mountains, our rivers start from small springs and creeks and head towards the sea.  They pass through forest and swamps, and eventually hit the estuaries, bordered by 344,500 acres of salt marsh behind South Carolina’s has 27 barrier islands.  This creates a complex, bio diverse, ecosystem for the naturalist and explorer.  South Carolina ranks first on East Coast in land conservation which allows us to enjoy these areas in their natural state.
Salty Kidz’ Naturalist Excursions are led by CPR certified guides who are trained naturalists.  They are experienced in providing safe, educational, and fun hiking trips.  We may take a ferry, or boat to some locations, which will affect cost.

Dragon Boat Race

Dragon Boat racing started over 2000 years ago in Asia, one of the oldest sports in the world, rooted deep in ancient culture and religion.  A team of around 20 paddles a beautiful long wooden canoe to the beat of a drum.  The sport promotes team work as well as power and endurance.
Salty Kidz’ Dragon Boat Team is a partnership between Salty Kidz and The Charleston Paddle Company. Practices will be led by CPR certified dragon boat professionals.  They are experienced in racing and using dragon boats and outrigger canoes.  The team will practice every Saturday March 22-May 3 and then compete in Charleston Dragon Boat Festival May 10.

We offer our outings well below the average rate to youth organizations to make it possible for all youth to participate. We can further aid in funding outings with our scholarship program, fundraising campaigns, and our network of sponsors and supporters. Many times, we can provide the program at no cost to organizations. We can also customize programs to fit organization’s needs, numbers of youth, and budget. We can include curriculum based science lessons as well.
